FAQs

A comprehensive guide to all your questions regarding menstrual cups and usage. You can download our user guide here.

First-Time Users

Is it safe for virgins?
Yes, menstrual cups can be used regardless of sexual activity. We recommend choosing our Small size and taking time to practice insertion techniques. The cup sits lower than the hymen in most cases, but if you have concerns, consult with your healthcare provider.
Use one of our recommended folds (Punch-Down, Labia, or 7-Fold), relax your muscles, and aim toward your tailbone for easy insertion. Find a comfortable position (sitting on the toilet, squatting, or standing with one leg raised). Once inserted, the cup should unfold naturally, creating a seal. You can check the seal by gently tugging on the stem or rotating the cup slightly.
When positioned correctly, you shouldn’t feel your cup at all. If you do feel discomfort, it might be inserted too low, not fully opened, or you might need a different size. The stem can be trimmed if it extends outside your body and causes irritation. Give yourself 2-3 cycles to adjust to using a cup before making fit adjustments.
Most users report getting comfortable with their cup within 2-3 cycles. The learning curve varies from person to person. We recommend practicing insertion and removal before your period starts and using a backup method like a panty liner during your first cycle with the cup.

We offer two sizes: Small (light flow, younger users, or those who have never given birth vaginally) and Medium (heavy flow or those over 30 who have given birth vaginally). Your cervix height, flow volume, and physical activity level may also influence which size works best for you.

Usage & Care

Will it leak?
When properly positioned, leaking should not occur. Most leaks happen due to incorrect insertion, not achieving a proper seal, or overflow on extremely heavy days. If leaking persists, ensure your cup is fully open after insertion (run a finger around the base), positioned below your cervix, and emptied regularly enough for your flow.

Empty your cup every 6-12 hours depending on your flow. On heavier days, you might need to empty it more frequently. The Small cup holds 3-4 times more than a regular tampon, and the Medium cup offers even greater capacity. You should never leave your cup in for more than 12 hours.

Rinse your cup thoroughly with clean water and wash with mild, fragrance-free soap or our specialized iluvcups washmycup. Avoid using harsh soaps, scented products, vinegar, or tea tree oil as these can damage the silicone and cause irritation. Make sure to rinse all soap residue before reinsertion.

Either boil your cup for 5-10 minutes in a pot dedicated to this purpose (don’t leave unattended), use a microwave sterilizing container, or thoroughly clean with iluvcups washmycup. Make sure your cup is completely dry before storing it in the breathable cotton pouch provided with your purchase.

Yes! One of the major benefits of menstrual cups is that they can be worn safely for up to 12 hours, making them perfect for overnight use. Many users find that cups eliminate the worry of nighttime leaks that can happen with pads or tampons.

If possible, use a restroom with a sink in the stall. Otherwise, empty the contents into the toilet, wipe the cup with toilet paper or wipes, and reinsert. Clean it thoroughly when you get home. Many users find they can go 12 hours without emptying, allowing them to avoid this situation entirely.

Product Information

Can I use it with an IUD?
Yes, but we recommend taking extra precautions. Always break the seal carefully before removal to avoid dislodging your IUD. Position the cup lower than usual to maintain distance between the cup and your IUD strings. Consult your healthcare provider for personalized advice, and check your strings regularly to ensure proper IUD placement.

Yes, our Small cup holds 2-3 times more than a regular tampon, and our Medium cup offers even greater capacity. For extremely heavy flow days, you might need to empty more frequently than the maximum 12-hour window. Some users with very heavy flows use period underwear as backup protection.

Properly cleaned cups are safer than tampons and don’t cause Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS). The medical-grade silicone doesn’t harbor bacteria when properly cleaned. Unlike tampons, cups collect rather than absorb, maintaining your natural vaginal pH and moisture. Always wash your hands before handling your cup and keep it clean to minimize any risk of infection.

Many users with endometriosis or PCOS report that cups are more comfortable than other menstrual products. However, individual experiences vary, and some might experience discomfort. We recommend consulting with your healthcare provider for personalized advice. Our flexible silicone formula is designed to be gentle for sensitive users.

Yes, but you might need to adjust the insertion angle. Users with a tilted uterus often find success by directing the cup more toward their tailbone during insertion. You may also find certain folding methods work better for your anatomy. The cup should position itself naturally once inside.

Health & Safety

What are iluvcups made of?
Our cups are made of 100% medical-grade silicone that is FDA-approved, BPA-free, and hypoallergenic. We use only body-safe dyes for our colored cups. All materials are latex-free and phthalate-free, making them suitable for sensitive users or those with allergies.
With proper care, your iluvcups menstrual cup can last up to 10 years. We recommend replacing your cup if you notice any tears, holes, or if the silicone becomes sticky or develops an odor that doesn’t come out with cleaning. Most users replace their cups every 2-5 years.

We offer two models: Small, for those who haven’t given birth AND have a light to medium flow, and Medium, for those who have given birth AND have a heavier flow.

Absolutely! One of the biggest advantages of menstrual cups is their suitability for all physical activities. You can swim, run, practice yoga, and perform any exercise without worrying about leaks or discomfort.

Yes! Each cup replaces approximately 2,400 tampons or pads over its lifetime. We are conscious about our packaging also and use minimal plastic. Our commitment to sustainability also extends to our manufacturing process. Using a menstrual cup significantly reduces your period’s environmental footprint.

Troubleshooting

My cup won't open after insertion. What should I do?

Try rotating the cup 360 degrees once inserted, or run a finger around the base to feel for any folds. You can also try the “punch down” fold which pops open more easily, or gently pull down slightly on the stem after insertion.

Don’t panic—it cannot get lost inside you. First, relax your muscles completely. Squat down to bring the cup lower if needed. Insert one finger alongside the cup and press inward on the rim to break the seal. Then use your pelvic floor muscles to push down while gently pulling on the stem or base of the cup. If you consistently have difficulty, consider a cup with a longer stem or different shape.

This could be due to several factors: the cup might be too large, positioned incorrectly, pressing on your bladder, or the stem might need trimming. Try a smaller size if pressure is the issue. Make sure the cup isn’t sitting too high—it should be positioned lower than a tampon. If discomfort persists after 2-3 cycles of use, please contact our customer support.

Yes, slight discoloration is normal over time and doesn’t affect the functionality or hygiene of your cup. To minimize staining, rinse with cold water first before using warm water and soap. You can also soak it in a 1:9 solution of hydrogen peroxide and water for no more than 10 minutes to help remove stains (rinse thoroughly afterward).
A slight odor can develop over time due to mineral deposits from your body. This doesn’t mean your cup is dirty or unsafe. To address this, boil your cup or soak it in a 1:9 solution of hydrogen peroxide and water for up to 10 minutes, then rinse thoroughly. Never use scented products to mask odors as these can cause irritation.

For those with a high cervix, our cups can be easily used. If you have a low cervix, you might need to trim the stem completely and use the base of the cup for removal.
